- The award-winning project is an initiative that donates food to charities in collaboration with Hope Food and collaboration with the weSAVEeat App, which allows people to purchase a set of fresh products at half price at the end of the day.
- This packaged fresh food surplus management initiative is part of all Grupo Vips brands’ (not only Starbucks but also VIPS, Ginos, Fridays and wagamama as well as the premium sandwich factory BSF) commitment to donating non-perishable excess food from its warehouses to charities each time there is a change in season or menu.
Starbucks Spain was recognized yesterday at the IV Restaurant Brands Awards in the Excellence and Sustainability category for its commitment to managing excess food. The aim of these awards is to spread awareness for best practices, professionals and companies working in the organized restaurant sector in Spain.
The award acknowledges the projects Starbucks implemented in 2017 to manage the fresh food surplus at its stores. The first of these initiatives was developed in collaboration with Hope Food, a social-based entrepreneurial project. Following this alliance, Starbucks gives Hope Food the fresh and packaged products that have still not expired remaining in its stores in Madrid to be distributed by Hope Food among various community kitchens. More than 3,500 menus have already been donated this year.
The second project in Barcelona is carried out in collaboration with the weSAVEeat App, a mobile application through which users can purchase the surplus fresh food at stores at the end of the day at half price. With the WeSAVEeat application, which responds to one of the six United Nations recommendations to fight food waste and which has already been downloaded more than 20,000 times, Starbucks stores in Barcelona offer a package of three food products each (one salty and two sweet products) for sale each day. Users can purchase the packages through the app at a price of €4 and collect them at the store during the last hour of operation.
This initiative is part of Starbucks and all Grupo Vips brands’ (not only Starbucks but also VIPS, Ginos, Fridays and wagamama as well as the premium sandwich factory BSF) commitment to donating non-perishable excess food from its warehouses to charities each time there is a change in season or menu.
The aim of the IV Organized Restaurant Awards is to spread awareness for best practices and success stories among organized restaurant chains in Spain as well as highlight professionals and companies in the sector as one of the leading generators of employment in the country. Moreover, the association seeks to highlight all organizations, companies and people who support the sector.
