“We’re very thankful for the wonderful welcome we’re being given in Granada. Many of the brand’s fans have been asking us to open a Starbucks store in this city for a long time and this project became a reality today. We’re thrilled to be able to share our passion for coffee and our baristas’ knowledge and dedication with the people of Granada,” said Álvaro Salafranca, CEO of Starbucks in Spain and Portugal.
Starbucks pays homage to Nasrid tile
To celebrate its arrival in Granada, Starbucks is paying homage to the history of Nasrid tile, which has inspired the colorful designs of some of the most beautiful buildings of Granada’s architecture. To do so, the brand has recovered the legend of the Mexuar Hall, one of the most popular rooms at the Alhambra - an architectural gem and the symbol of the city.
According to historians, there was a raised chamber in the Nasrid tiled Mexuar Hall camouflaged by a beautiful trellis behind which the Sultan would hide to listen in on the accused’s conversations without being seen. Thus, he would practice objective justice since he would listen to the true stories of those taken to the Palace to declare. And that’s how he got the people to trust him as his decisions were always correct.
In fact, people who went to this room would find a Nasrid tile at the entrance that said: “Enter and ask. Don’t be afraid to ask for justice as you have found it”.
Continuing with the legend, Starbucks wanted to include this story in its new opening by giving away one of the brand’s beverages to the first customers along with a tile inspired by the famous room with an inscription alluding to the original phrase: “Enter and enjoy. Don’t be afraid to ask for your beverage as you have found it”.
Granadian inspiration in the new store in downtown Granada
The new Starbucks Gran Via de Colon store is in an emblematic building in the capital city of Granada as the facade is part of the city’s protected architectural heritage. On the inside, the design of the premises evokes the shapes and colors of coffee crops and includes details in wood and iron which create an exceptional contrast with the Granadian architecture. The palette of colors chosen for the decoration at this location reflects the sunny climate the city’s known for and is based on soft hues, beige paint and light-colored wood which reproduces the coffee experience lived and felt at Starbucks.
The brand is growing in Spain with a commitment to Andalusia
The opening of this store is part of the brand’s commitment to Andalusia where it already has 14 stores (one in Granada, one in Cordoba, 4 in Seville and 8 in Malaga). This expansion will continue all year long in this area where the brand plans new openings.
