Grupo Vips is reinforcing its commitment to youth employment

  • Grupo Vips celebrated the 2017/2018 “Road to Employment” graduation with 100 students participating.
  • The event featured Luis María López – Aranguren, a leader in the job insertion of at-risk young people, and the emotional testimony of Oscar Villalta, an asylum seeker who has participated in the Road to Employment program.

 Grupo Vips, one of the leading food service groups in Spain, recently celebrated the graduation of students in the 2017/2018 “Road to Employment” program aimed at improving the employability of groups in vulnerable situations.

The event, which was held at the Impact Hub in Piamonte street, was attended by Enrique Francia, CEO of Grupo Vips, María Calvo, Director of Talent Management and CSR, and María Escribano, the group’s Corporate Responsibility Manager. “Handing out our Road to Employment diplomas has become a very emotional tradition for all of us who are a part of Grupo Vips. Our goal is for the company to become a place where young people want to work and this year’s graduates are examples for everyone,” said María Calvo during the ceremony.

The event recognized the hard work done by the 2017/2018 participants. A total of 100 students have learned about responsibility, teamwork and decision-making by working side-by-side with the company’s professionals.  These young people were referred by the entities Asociación La Rueca, Fundación ACOBE, Fundación ADRA, Fundación Altius Francisco de Vitoria, Spanish Red Cross, CEAR, Fundación Exit, Pinardi and Fundación Tomillo with which Grupo Vips collaborated throughout the different phases of the program.

During the event and in recognition for this graduating class and their efforts, images of the students were projected along with their statements regarding what this experience has meant to each of them.

Moreover, Luis María López – Aranguren, a leader in the job insertion of at-risk youth, spoke before the diplomas were handed out emphasizing “the importance of companies offering young people training opportunities as Grupo Vips does”.

The students also heard Oscar Villalta, a Starbucks Supervisor and asylum seeker from the “En la Línea de Salida” program, speak about his own personal experience: “I’ll always be thankful to the Grupo Vips program for giving me the necessary stability to start all over again and for allowing me to grow personally and professionally.”

On the other hand, Enrique Francia, Grupo Vips CEO, was responsible for closing the ceremony and reaffirmed their commitment to corporate responsibility. “At Grupo Vips, CSR is not a department, it’s a value”, he pointed out.

Generating employment: a top priority for Grupo Vips

One of Grupo Vips’ main goals is helping young people access the job market. Precisely in order to do so, the company works on the “Road to Employment” program through which 970 at-risk people have been hired by the Group over the last 3 years.

This complete Grupo Vips employability program is comprised of different phases and seeks to accompany young people in all phases of the job access process including preliminary skills-building and practice in real environments.

Furthermore, in order to create opportunities for young people, the group trained a total of 1,683 people in food service and job skills. Over the last year, 823 people have benefitted from these courses.  Of these, 406 young people were able to use what they had learned by doing internships at the company and 317 received their first job experience through the group. Two hundred Grupo Vips professionals have invested 2,600 hours since 2015 in coaching sessions, workshops and job orientation sessions.
