Grupo Vips has hired 970 people in vulnerable situations in the last 3 years

  • Grupo Vips concludes its Corporate Responsibility Master Plan for 2015-2017, a period during which it has worked on four areas of action aimed at: generating job opportunities for young people and people in vulnerable situations, collaborating with community organizations to meet the specific needs of the places where we do business, innovating and increasing its healthy eating offer and continuing to reduce its environmental impact.
  • Grupo Vips also offers a look at the lines established in its new 2018-2020 Master Plan, which takes on significant commitments to improvement in each one of these areas of action.

Grupo Vips, one of the leading multi-brand and multi-format groups in the food service sector in Spain, has just presented the results of its 2015-2017 Corporate Responsibility Master Plan, which makes clear the Group’s commitment to building up a competitive, profitable and sustainable business. This Plan was implemented around its four lines of action: employability programs, community involvement, healthy eating and reducing its environmental impact, and ended with excellent results which highlight the Group’s commitment to building up a competitive, profitable and sustainable business.

Generation of job opportunities

One of Grupo Vips’ main goals is helping young people access the job market. To do so, the company developed the Road to Employment program through which 970 people in vulnerable situations have been hired by the Group over the last 3 years. In order to create opportunities for young people, the Group trained a total of 1,683 people in food service and job skills. Over the last year, 823 people benefitted from these courses.  Of these, 406 young people were able to use what they had learned by doing internships at the company and 317 received their first job experience through the group.

Moreover, 200 Grupo Vips professionals have invested 2,600 volunteer hours since 2015 in coaching sessions, workshops and job orientation sessions as part of the corporate volunteer program.

Community involvement

Grupo Vips is committed to the areas around it. Aware of its ability to influence and the possibilities it has to improve the lives of the people in its communities, the group has developed long-term and stable relationships with more than 40 collaborating organizations including: Fundación Hazloposible, Save the Children, Adisli, Aleph Tea and Asin Down, among many others.

To this end, more than 1,800 of the group’s professionals have been involved throughout the 2015-2017 Master Plan in volunteer actions with an immense commitment. In all, they have dedicated 6,000 hours of their time meeting the specific needs of vulnerable groups with activities like leisure and free time workshops, creativity, artistic expression...

As a result, Grupo Vips has helped more than 4,500 people in the last three years enjoy alternative entertainment and develop skills through mentoring, tutoring and training.

A commitment to varied and balanced foods

Grupo Vips works each day to offer more alternatives and variety on its menus and daily set menus, making it easier to choose. Thanks to its commitment, Grupo Vips was pioneer in meeting the needs of people with celiac disease by developing gluten-free dishes for all of its brands.  Since 2015, more than 569,000 dishes have been served to people who are gluten intolerant under strict protocols certified by FACE (Spanish Federation of Coeliac Disease Associations). Along these same lines, the company has introduced new ingredients in its offer such as different low-fat plant-based and dairy beverages and whole grains in its recipes.

Reducing the environmental impact

Caring for the environment is one of the group’s major goals: fostering a recycling culture, using more efficient packaging and controlling its energy consumption are aspects Grupo Vips works on day after day to improve. In 2017, the group was able to reduce its energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 6.63% in comparison to 2015.

The company is aware of the enormous challenge involved with reducing its environmental impact and, therefore, it takes energy efficiency into account in each of the decisions it makes. Thus, 100% of the energy it consumes comes from renewable sources. Moreover, in 2017, it succeeded in installing LED lighting, which is more sustainable, efficient and long-lasting, in 85% of its locations. Thanks to these measures, the company’s energy consumption in 2017 was 44 GwH versus the 47 GwH consumed in 2015. 

In its new 2018-2020 Master Plan, the Grupo Vips commitment is to continue developing its business in a responsible manner, seeking an even bigger impact on society. As concerns employability, some of its upcoming objectives for 2020 are hiring a minimum of 500 people a year from groups in vulnerable situations and working on job integration with local partners in 15 provinces. On the other hand, the group is increasing its offer of dishes to meet the new demands for food outside the home with healthy ingredients and vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as the offer for customers with dietary intolerances to gluten, lactose, etc.  It is also committed to adapting its culinary offer to the main recommendations from the most relevant food and health organizations.

And at the same time, with regard to the environment, Grupo Vips is working to promote waste recycling at 100% of its locations, responsibly managing excess food at all restaurants and searching for opportunities to improve take away packaging to reduce its environmental impact.
