Madrid; June 1, 2017. Grupo Vips, one of the leading multi-brand and multi-format groups in the food service and retail sector in Spain, presented its Annual Responsible Management Report today. In this document, Grupo Vips outlines the projects that have been carried out under this philosophy, especially in the areas of creating job opportunities, food for everyone, the environment and participating in the community.
“We’re aware of our capacity to generate value and a positive impact on society and we’re committed to taking advantage of this opportunity to help build a more just and healthier society hand in hand with each one of the people who are a part of Grupo Vips in addition to our suppliers, whose commitment is fundamental to achieving these goals,” said María Calvo, Director of CR and Talent at Grupo Vips, which covers the brands VIPS, VIPS Smart, Ginos, Starbucks, Fridays, wagamama, BSF, Club Vips and SDH in Spain and Portugal.
Road to Employment: an integrated employability program
One of Grupo Vips’ most significant commitments is to working on programs that help improve job insertion for the underprivileged. “Road to Employment” is a program that was designed to improve young people’s skills and to assist them throughout all of the stages on their road to employability. The project has become a benchmark program in facilitating the inclusion of young people in vulnerable situations in the labor market.
In 2016, a total of 447 young people participated in pre-employment training activities and 393 people at risk of exclusion were hired by the company, which made an investment associated with this program of €1,218,560 in training.
Moreover, Grupo Vips consistently works with Special Employment Centers, which are product and service companies that aim to provide paid work to people with some type of disability. In 2016, Grupo Vips invested €4,753,081.29 in these centers which is 2.66% more than in 2015.
A more balanced and healthy diet
Grupo Vips reinforced its commitment last year to diversifying the culinary offering of its brands by including new ingredients and implementing all-new production procedures to offer its customers a greater variety of healthy and innovative options.
In 2016, Grupo Vips continued working on this line of action with the inclusion of seasonal ingredients and new additions to its menus such as bulgur, kale, whole wheat pasta with spelt and all-new vegetable juices and cold creamed soups.
Last year, Grupo Vips also updated the gluten-free menus offered by its brands VIPS, VIPS Smart, Ginos and Fridays with all-new recipes developed based on suggestions from its customers with coeliac disease which include gluten-free versions of its most iconic dishes. The brands were recognized through popular voting as the restaurant chains with the best offering for people with coeliac disease at the latest edition of the awards granted by FACE (Spanish Federation of Coeliac Disease Associations).
More sustainable and responsible consumption
100% of the energy consumed by Grupo Vips already comes from renewable sources and its energy consumption has dropped in 2016 by almost 4%, preventing the emission of 950 tons of CO.
Furthermore, Grupo Vips carries out programs to promote recycling and reduce the amount of plastic consumed. Thus, it was able to reduce the consumption of plastic by 3.6 tons in 2016 thanks to a change in packaging at its factory BSF. The Group also recycled 135,915 liters of oil.
In order to minimize food waste, the Group implemented a plan last year focusing on prevention and substantial improvements in surplus donations, guaranteeing the proper conservation of the food throughout the process. Therefore, food donations to various organizations increased by 77% in 2016, for an estimated value of more than €138,000.
Commitment to the community
Grupo Vips encourages procurement from local suppliers and adjusts the offering of certain fresh products on its menus and menus of the day considering seasonality and production origin. In 2016, the share of local food suppliers at Grupo Vips rose by 89% and 13 of the top 15 suppliers in turnover volume were Spanish.
Grupo Vips also seeks to actively participate in the community with the development of volunteer programs in collaboration with various social organizations both as concerns specific awareness campaigns as well as skills improvement and entrepreneurism programs.
In 2016, more than 600 Grupo Vips volunteers assisted 1,653 people to facilitate their integration and supported more than 40 social organizations which accounted for 2,665 volunteer hours and an increase of 92% in the time used by Grupo Vips volunteers to make this commitment possible.
